Air freight
Calculate the emissions of air freight shipments from the route or distance, the cargo weight and the type of aircraft. SQUAKE supports two methodologies for air freight.
Choose a methodology
| Methodology | Coverage | Basis | Inputs you need | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIN EN 16258 | Not stated | DIN EN 16258 (March 2013) | origin and destination or distance_in_km, weight_in_tonnes; optional plane_type, energy_scope | plane_type is belly_freighter or freighter and defaults to belly_freighter. |
| GLEC | Not stated | GLEC Framework v3.2 (2025) | origin and destination or distance_in_km, weight_in_tonnes; optional plane_type, energy_scope | Adds an average plane_type, used by default when you don't know how the cargo flies. |
Both methodologies support audit records with audit.
How to decide
- Use GLEC when you don't know whether the cargo travels in a passenger aircraft's hold or on a dedicated freighter: it has an
averageoption. - Both methodologies take the same inputs, so if you know the aircraft type, pick the one your reporting framework names.
- GLEC v3.2 aligns with ISO 14083 and the GHG Protocol for Scope 3 categories 4 and 9, according to the GLEC v3.2 update.
