Hotel: DEFRA π¬π§
Calculate hotel stay emissions with the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Conversion Factors, pinned to a specific year or using the latest supported year.
Overview
DEFRA has pioneered carbon accounting standards across many sectors. For hotels, the DEFRA methodology emphasizes transparency and consistency. Its guidelines account for the different energy consumption patterns of hotel types, from luxury resorts to budget motels. They cover direct energy use, including heating, cooling and electricity, and also indirect emissions from supply chain activities, food and beverage services, waste disposal and guest transportation.
The methodology also emphasizes adaptability and continuous improvement. Hotels are encouraged not only to measure and report their carbon footprint but also to act to reduce it. With specific guidance on reduction strategies, from energy-efficient appliances to waste reduction, DEFRA's approach helps the hotel sector contribute to broader sustainability goals.
Versioning
Add methodology_version to pin a specific Conversion Factors year, for example "2024". If you leave it out, SQUAKE applies the latest supported year. Pin a specific year for reproducibility and auditability.
