Road Freight: DIN EN 16258

Calculate road freight emissions with the DIN EN 16258 methodology, the European standard for calculating and declaring energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport services.

About the methodology

DIN EN 16258 is a European standard for calculating and declaring energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in transport services. It gives road freight operators a structured way to quantify their emissions, based on factors such as fuel type, vehicle efficiency and load optimisation.

The standard applies to different modes of transport, and is particularly relevant for road freight. It covers operational emissions, which come directly from fuel combustion, and embedded emissions, such as those from vehicle production, maintenance and end of life. This level of detail accounts for every emission source in the road freight journey and supports transparent reporting and benchmarking.

Sample requests

Send a quote before the shipment is booked, then repeat the call with audit set to true once the booking is final. The body is otherwise identical.

audit_for is optional

Pass the ID of an auditable entity when you calculate on behalf of that entity. Otherwise, leave it out.

Defaults

When a field is missing, SQUAKE fills it in before calculating.

DIN-EN-16258

originstring

SQUAKE tries to resolve the location whatever its format. Ideally, use the Post standard for addresses, an IATA/ICAO code for airports (format ^[A-Z]{3,4}$, for example "MUC"), and a UN/LOCODE for other locations used in trade and transportation (format ^[A-Z]{2}\W?[A-Z2-9]{3}$, for example "DEHAM"). You can also pass latitude and longitude (format ^[-+]?\d{1,3}\.\d{1,10}\s?,\s?[-+]?\d{1,3}\.\d{1,10}$, for example "+40.712,-74.006").

destinationstring

Same formats as origin.

distance_in_kmnumber

Takes priority over origin and destination. Without it, SQUAKE resolves the distance from them. If you send both, SQUAKE uses distance_in_km.

weight_in_tonnesnumber

Weight of the freight in tonnes.

truck_typeenum

under_7.5_t, under_12_t, under_24_t or under_40_t. Defaults to under_7.5_t.

energy_scopeenum

ttw or wtw. Defaults to wtw.

external_referencestring

Your identifier for the item, up to 128 characters, so you can match results to requests. SQUAKE doesn't guarantee the order of items.

auditboolean

Set to true to create immutable audit records for finalised calculations. Must be enabled for your account.
