Sea Freight: DIN EN 16258

Calculate sea freight energy use and greenhouse gas emissions with the DIN EN 16258 standard from the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), which accounts for ship type, fuel consumed, distance traveled and cargo tonnage.

Sample requests

Send the first body for a quote before booking. Once the booking is final, send it again with audit set to true.

audit_for is optional

Pass the ID of an auditable entity when you calculate on behalf of that entity. Otherwise, leave it out.

Defaults

When a field is missing, SQUAKE fills it in before calculating.

How it's calculated

Emissions are first calculated for the whole VOS from its fuel consumption.

Well-to-wheels GHG emissions of the VOSG_w(VOS) = F(VOS) Γ— g_w
F(VOS)
Total fuel consumption used for the VOS.
g_w
Well-to-wheels GHG emission factor for the fuel used.
Tank-to-wheels GHG emissions of the VOSG_t(VOS) = F(VOS) Γ— g_t
g_t
Tank-to-wheels GHG emission factor for the fuel used.

A share of the VOS's energy and emissions is then allocated to the transport service for the leg, based on the relative transport activity of the leg and of the associated VOS.

Share of the legS(leg) = T(leg) Γ· T(VOS)
S(leg)
Share of the VOS's energy and emissions allocated to a transport service for the leg.
T(leg)
The transport service's transport activity for the leg.
T(VOS)
Transport activity of the VOS that is related to the leg.
GHG emissions of the legG_w(leg) = G_w(VOS) Γ— S(leg); G_t(leg) = G_t(VOS) Γ— S(leg)
G_w(leg)
Well-to-wheels GHG emissions allocated to the leg.
G_t(leg)
Tank-to-wheels GHG emissions allocated to the leg.

Request fields

typestringrequired

sea_freight

methodologystringrequired

DIN-EN-16258

originstring

SQUAKE tries to resolve any format. Ideally, use the Post standard for addresses, UN/LOCODE for ports (DEHAM), or latitude and longitude (+40.712,-74.006).

destinationstring

Same formats as origin.

distance_in_kmnumber

Takes priority over origin and destination. Without it, SQUAKE resolves the distance from them.

weight_in_tonnesnumber

Cargo weight in tonnes.

vessel_typeenum

DIN EN 16258 only considers tanker and container. Defaults to container.

energy_scopeenum

ttw or wtw. Defaults to wtw.

external_referencestring

Your identifier for the item, up to 128 characters, so you can match results to requests. SQUAKE doesn't guarantee the order of items.

auditboolean

Set to true to create immutable audit records for finalised calculations. Must be enabled for your account.
