Flight: DEFRA π¬π§
Calculate passenger flight emissions with the UK government's DEFRA Conversion Factors, pinned to a factor year or using the latest supported one.
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) provides a standardised way to evaluate the emissions of passenger air travel. Its methodology takes into account the aircraft's fuel consumption, flight distance, aircraft type and the indirect effects of high-altitude emissions.
Versioning
Add methodology_version to pin a specific Conversion Factors year (for example "2024"). If you leave it out, SQUAKE uses the latest supported year.
Sample requests
Send a quote while the traveller is still choosing a flight, then repeat the call with audit set to true once the booking is final. The body is otherwise identical.

}audit_for is optional
Pass the ID of an auditable entity when you calculate on behalf of that entity. Otherwise, leave it out.
Defaults
When a field is missing, SQUAKE fills it in before calculating.
| Field | Default | Applies when |
|---|---|---|
booking_class | average | No booking_class is sent and none can be resolved from fare_class and airline |
energy_scope | wtw | No energy_scope is sent |
radiative_forcing_index | true | No radiative_forcing_index is sent |
methodology_version | Latest supported DEFRA year | No methodology_version is sent |
How it's calculated
- An 8% uplift is applied to the great-circle distance (GCD) to account for indirect paths, delays and similar factors.
- If you send both
distance_in_kmandorigin/destination,distance_in_kmtakes precedence.
Request fields
typestringrequiredflight
methodologystringrequiredDEFRA
methodology_versionstringDEFRA Conversion Factors year, for example "2024". Optional. If you leave it out, SQUAKE uses the latest supported year.
originstringIATA/ICAO airport code (MUC), UN/LOCODE for other locations (DEHAM), or latitude and longitude (+40.712,-74.006). For multi-leg trips, use routing instead.
destinationstringSame formats as origin.
routingstringHyphen-separated airports for multi-leg itineraries, instead of origin and destination. See Flight: Routing (multi-leg).
distance_in_kmnumberOverrides the distance resolved from origin and destination. With routing, it isn't used as the routed total.
booking_classenumIf you leave it out, send fare_class and airline so SQUAKE can resolve it. Defaults to average.
fare_classstringTogether with airline, mutually exclusive with booking_class.
airlinestringTogether with fare_class, mutually exclusive with booking_class.
aircraft_typestringIATA/ICAO code. Applied only when at least one airport is in the UK. See Aircraft type distribution.
radiative_forcing_indexbooleanApplies the high-altitude climate impact multiplier. Defaults to true.
energy_scopeenumwtw or ttw. Defaults to wtw.
number_of_travelersintegerMinimum 1. Defaults to 1.
external_referencestringYour identifier for the item, up to 128 characters.
sustainable_fuelsbooleanMarks the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This lowers the emissions SQUAKE calculates, but isn't part of the official DEFRA factors.
carbon_reduction_percentage_of_totalnumberShare of emissions reduced by SAF, from 0 to 1. Defaults to 0.
auditbooleanSet to true to create immutable audit records for finalised calculations. Must be enabled for your account.
