Flight: GATE4

Calculate passenger flight emissions with the ISO-certified GATE4 methodology by Advito, resolved per flight from carrier, flight number, route and departure date.

type flightmethodology GATE4Supports audit mode

GATE4 is a carbon emissions calculation methodology developed by Advito for the travel sector, with a particular focus on flights. For flights, it accounts for aircraft type, passenger-to-freight ratios, carbon intensity and the effect of radiative forcing. The methodology is ISO-certified. Through the GATE4 Insights dashboard, it also gives travel managers insights into hotel stays, rail journeys and car rentals.

Sample requests

Send a quote while the traveller is still choosing a flight, then repeat the call with audit set to true once the booking is final. The body is otherwise identical.

audit_for is optional

Pass the ID of an auditable entity when you calculate on behalf of that entity. Otherwise, leave it out.

Defaults

When a field is missing, SQUAKE fills it in before calculating.

booking_classeconomyNo booking_class is sent and none can be resolved from fare_class and airline

Request fields

typestringrequired

flight

methodologystringrequired

GATE4

originstring

Three-letter IATA airport code, such as MUC. For multi-leg trips, use routing instead.

destinationstring

Same format as origin.

routingstring

Hyphen-separated airports for multi-leg itineraries, instead of origin and destination. See Flight: Routing (multi-leg).

departure_datestring

Departure date in YYYY-MM-DD format, aligned with ISO 8601.

flight_numberstring

Include the airline designator, such as "BA115". "115" also works when you send airline separately.

booking_classenum

If you leave it out, sending fare_class and airline is highly recommended so SQUAKE can resolve it. Defaults to economy.

fare_classstring

A single letter such as Y or J. Together with airline, mutually exclusive with booking_class.

airlinestring

IATA designator such as LH; airline names are resolved too. Together with fare_class, mutually exclusive with booking_class.

aircraft_typestring

Aircraft type in IATA or ICAO format.

number_of_travelersinteger

Minimum 1. Defaults to 1.

external_referencestring

Your identifier for the item, up to 128 characters, so you can match results to requests. SQUAKE doesn't guarantee the order of items.

sustainable_fuelsboolean

Marks the use of sustainable fuels. This lowers the emissions SQUAKE calculates, but isn't part of the current official frameworks.

carbon_reduction_percentage_of_totalnumber

Share of emissions reduced by sustainable fuel, from 0 to 1. Defaults to 0.

auditboolean

Set to true to create immutable audit records for finalised calculations. Must be enabled for your account.

How SQUAKE resolves the GATE4 record

GATE4 figures are flight-level: Advito publishes one record per operating carrier, flight number, route and departure date, and that record implies the aircraft configuration. SQUAKE resolves each flight in the following order, agreed with Advito, and stops at the first level that yields data:

  1. exact: carrier, flight number, route and departure date all match.
  2. flight_nearest_date: the same carrier and flight number on the route, on the closest available date. With a booking_class, SQUAKE prefers the closest date whose aircraft offers that cabin.
  3. carrier_route_date: the average of the carrier's flights on the route on the departure date.
  4. route_date: the average of all carriers' flights on the route on the departure date.
  5. carrier_route_nearest_date: level 3 on the closest date with data.
  6. route_nearest_date: level 4 on the closest date with data.

A flight number is never matched against another carrier. Without a departure_date, "closest date" is measured from the day of the request. When no level yields data, the flight fails with not_found.

SQUAKE keeps GATE4 records from 1 January 2019 onward. Up to July 2025 they're the historical figures Advito provided; from then on they're the monthly schedules Advito publishes, each kept as published closest to the departure date. A past departure therefore resolves at the level its record allows, most often exact.

Always pass a departure date

Read match_level in the response to decide whether to apply your own fallback, for example GATE4 Light.

Algorithm specifics

The algorithm_specifics object in the response describes how the figure was resolved.

match_levelstring

The resolution level that answered the flight. See How SQUAKE resolves the GATE4 record.

matched_airlinestring

Airline of the record the figure was taken from. Set only for carrier-level averages among the averaged levels.

matched_flight_numberinteger

Flight number of the record the figure was taken from. null for averaged levels.

matched_departure_datestring

Departure date of the record the figure was taken from.

matched_flightsinteger

How many records were averaged; 1 for an exact or nearest-date match.

booking_class_usedstring

The cabin the figure belongs to. GATE4 has no figure for a cabin the matched aircraft doesn't offer, so SQUAKE falls back to the next lower cabin (first β†’ business β†’ premium_economy β†’ economy) and reports it here.

A routing item is resolved leg by leg, so these fields appear on each entry of legs (request expand: ["legs"]) rather than on the item itself.
